The Benefits of Having an oak desk in Your Home

Furniture is a very important part of our lives not only for everyday use but for what we leave behind as well. When we pass on we typically leave any furniture such as an old oak desk to surviving relatives to take care of. Chances are this furniture has seen a lot of history and we want it to end up where it will get the most use. But what qualities does furniture have to have in order to survive this long?

A piece of furniture such as an oak desk has to be strong and durable in order to withstand the rigors of home life. Given the fact that Oak is a very strong wood you would think all furniture made out of it would be durable. Unfortunately, no matter how good the material is if the construction is faulty any piece of furniture will break. However, the same goes for the opposite side of the coin as well.

No matter the material if the construction is good it will last a long time. Unfortunately, most of the furniture we buy now is made on an assembly line and not by hand which leads to very few durable pieces of furniture. There are still individual craftsman and small companies that make furniture the old fashioned way but they are few and far between. Finding them or their products takes some dedicated searching and a lot of patience.

A good old-fashioned oak desk is surprisingly in high demand these days. Since many of us are employed in the business world we use desks both at work and at home. While we make do with the cheap store bought products we tend to want something larger, heavier, stronger, and with a much longer lifespan. Of course buying one for home use and buying one for office use are two different things.

When you buy an oak desk for an office you have to make sure that it looks good, has a shinny finish on it, and generally gives off a professional feeling. Many CEO's can be judged by the condition and quality of their desks before an interview even begins. This has led to some canceled business meetings and harder negotiations in some cases. However having a large, well built, and well maintained desk leads to a higher opinion of you and therefore makes negotiations much easier as well.

Thankfully, you need not worry about such opinions and troubles when purchasing one for home use. When you buy a desk or other piece of furniture for your home your intended use for it may not be what it was originally designed to do. Many dinner tables, chairs, and even desks often end up being used as makeshift cutting boards or storage areas in garages.

However, in most cases something as durable as an oak desk usually ends up serving as a desk in one form or another for many years. Many people have fond memories of their grandparents having a desk such as this in a den or living room. Many of them are used for storing office supplies, bills, important documents, or in some cases even fishing supplies.

When choosing an oak desk of your own though there are a few things to keep in mind. We've already gone over construction and quality but what about size and functionality? There are many different models and types besides the standard 4 drawer model that is commonly used by the average person. You can buy models with larger drawers as well as models that have more drawers.

In addition, you can buy artist desks, work desks, and computer desks. An artist's desk is a desk that has several short drawers instead of the standard sized models and isn't as long as a normal desk. Most models allow the top of the desk to be rotated up to 90 degrees in some instances to aid in drawing, sketching, painting and other art related functions. These are perfect for comic book artists or the aspiring painter.

A work desk is different from a normal oak desk in that these are usually reinforced on the tops, sides, and legs. This is so they can bear up under a heavier load and withstand any abuse that they may have to endure during a work day. These are found in businesses where woodworking or accounting are common. A computer desk is a bit different than the two of these however.

If you buy an oak desk that's made for use with a computer chances are that its layout will be much different than what you might be used to. First you have the tray for the keyboard that rolls out on top of your lap and rolls back in under the table. You may also have several smaller cabinets instead of drawers for peripherals such as a printer, scanner, USB hub, or modem. Some models even include a much larger cabinet that you can sit your computer tower inside of.

Do keep in mind that it's a good idea to keep the door to said cabinet open when your computer is in operation in order to prevent overheating. An oak desk made for a computer will also have a redesigned top are that may have additional shelf space and specific spots for your monitor. Larger desks support more monitors and many users prefer corner desks.

Despite whatever you may buy your oak desk for you do still need to care for it properly. Make sure to keep it dusted and oil any moveable parts when they may need it. Failure to do so will result in a tarnished finish and drawers that refuse to open smoothly. You can also buy a desk that has wheels to make for easier movement when rearranging the furniture.

An oak desk can be a sound investment both in your future and your grandchildren's future. Good wooden furniture is hard to come by these days and finding a desk that serves you and lasts for a lifetime is very rare. After you manage to find one remember to take care of it and it will serve you and your family for generations to come.

A good idea for decorating the home office is to have a representation of all the major elements in the room. Plants would make an obvious earthly choice. An eye catching metal conversation piece could take center stage. Fountains and aquariums are extremely popular water features. A nice hand crafted oak desk and fireplace will dignify the room. Finally, paintings and accents will give the office a theme.

One thought is to show off travel destinations. Another is to hightlight a hobby or favorite sport. Whatever the executive's passion, it should be showcased as a driving force. Other aspirations will serve as inspirations and goals. A color scheme brings everything in balance. If the desk is brown, many matching color combinations will lend a bit of character. The chair selection should dictate power at the command post.

The choice of lighting should bathe and illuminate the room's personality and charm. If similar personality is displayed throughout the rest of the house, the balance is bound to flow in feng shui form. With the numbers of people working from home growing, ideas on making home office space productive and personal, is what more folks are just gonna wanna know. For many people it is a lot different from decorating the cubicle.
